The Authority participated at the Botswana Institute of Banking and Finance (BIBF)’s Compliance & Governance Conference 2026, held under the theme “Building Trust, Enhancing Security & Advancing Accountability in Botswana’s Financial and Digital Economy.”
The Authority’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr Mooketsi Ramanteba joined fellow regulators and industry leaders for a Panel discussion focused on: National Regulatory Update Regulators’ Priorities for 2026/27, which explored how effective regulation, supervision and industry collaboration can strengthen trust in Botswana’s financial and digital ecosystem.
During the discussion, Mr Ramanteba outlined the Authority’s commitment to a more forward-looking, risk-based supervision as the non-bank financial sector becomes increasingly diverse and interconnected. He highlighted that through the new 2026–2031 strategy; IGNITE 2031, the Authority is strengthening how it identifies emerging risks, evaluates the effectiveness of institutional controls and directs supervisory resources to areas of greatest concern.
He also emphasised the importance of balancing financial innovation with consumer protection and regulatory compliance. NBFIRA’s planned regulatory sandbox and Innovation Office will provide structured platforms for engaging with innovators, clarifying regulatory expectations, and supporting the responsible development of financial products and services.

The panel further examined opportunities to reduce unnecessary compliance costs through proportionate regulation, digital identity verification and stronger collaboration between regulators and industry. Mr Ramanteba underscored the need for a constructive relationship in which regulators and regulated entities share responsibility for building a stable, trusted and sustainable financial sector.
NBFIRA’s participation reinforces its commitment to stakeholder engagement, effective supervision and responsible innovation. Through continued dialogue and collaboration, the Authority seeks to strengthen regulatory outcomes, safeguard consumers and support confidence in Botswana’s non-bank financial services sector.
