NBFIRA Guest Lecture at BA ISAGO University on the Regulation and Supervision of Virtual Assets Service Providers (VASPs)
As part of its financial education function, the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (“NBFIRA”) the Fintech Department delivered a lecture to Ba Isago University students, under the theme “The Regulation and Supervision of Virtual Assets Service Providers (“VASPs”) on April 7,2025.
Mr. Letlhogonolo Motlhalamme from the Fintech Department deliberated on the Regulatory Authority’s mandate and how it contributes to the stability of the local financial system. He highlighted the rapidly evolving Financial Technology (FinTech”) field which encompasses a wide range of innovations, from digital payments and lending platforms, blockchain-based solutions, transactions in the blockchain, the buying, selling of cryptocurrencies to artificial intelligence-powered tools.
The presentation also elaborated about the regulation and supervision of the Virtual Assets Service Providers (“VASPs”), the types of VASPs and the available financial legislation that serve to mitigate systemic risks and preserve stakeholder confidence in the NBFI sector. Mr. Motlhalamme also took the students through the Fintech Tree Framework which provides a comprehensive overview of the Fintech ecosystem, highlighting the interconnectedness of various technologies, infrastructure, applications, and end-user services. He further deliberated on virtual assets which have an underpinning technology called a Blockchain that serves as a subset of Distributed Ledger Technology.
In conclusion, Mr. Motlhalamme buttressed on the available consumer education materials available on the Authority’s online platforms aimed at promoting consumer protection through knowledge empowerment, education and the reduction and deterrence of financial crime.
