NBFIRA Participates at the 2026 Botswana Pension Society Conference

The Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) is participating in the Botswana Pension Society Conference 2026, held from 12–13 March 2026 under the theme “Beyond Returns: Leveraging Pension Capital for National Development and Secure Pension Communities.” The conference brings together industry leaders, regulators, pension funds, and other stakeholders to deliberate on the role of pension capital in supporting sustainable economic growth while ensuring secure retirement outcomes for members. Through its participation, NBFIRA continues to engage with key industry stakeholders on matters affecting the retirement funds sector.

Representing the Authority, Mr. Emmanuel Pati, Senior Analyst in the Retirement Funds Department, delivered a presentation on regulatory developments and compliance updates within the retirement funds sector. The presentation highlighted key regulatory advancements, including the Retirement Funds Regulations (2025) and the Retirement Funds Administrative Rules (2024), which aim to strengthen governance frameworks, enhance transparency, and improve the protection of retirement fund members. The presentation also covered recent circulars issued to support greater compliance across the sector, including the introduction of minimum competency standards for retirement fund board members, improved processes for the disposition of lump-sum benefits upon the death of a member, and measures to ensure the timely remittance of pension contributions.

Mr. Pati in his deliberations also provided insights into the growth and investment trends within the sector. He further highlighted that as at December 2025, retirement funds’ Assets Under Management stood P167.2 billion, with 45.3 percent invested locally, reflecting the sector’s increasing contribution to domestic investment and national development. Through engagements such as the Botswana Pension Society Conference, NBFIRA continues to collaborate with industry stakeholders to strengthen the retirement funds sector, promote adherence to regulatory requirements, and safeguard the interests of pension fund members across Botswana.
