Growing Trend of Fraudulent Loan Applications

The Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA) and the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) warn of a rise in fraudulent loan applications targeting Micro-Lenders. Fraudsters are using counterfeit identity cards and forged income records to obtain loans illegally.

Financial institutions are urged to strengthen verification processes with issuing authorities and employers. The public is reminded that loan fraud is a serious criminal offence under the laws of Botswana.

We call upon members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspected fraud to the FIA, the Police, or the affected financial institution.

For more details, please tune in to NBFIRA’s upcoming radio interviews on Duma FM tomorrow at 12.30pm and another on the 16th of September 2025, at 12.30pm.

Both interviews will be live streamed on the Duma FM Facebook page and the NBFIRA’s Facebook page.
