Liberty Life Botswana’s Annuity Conference 2025: Shaping the Future of Retirement

At the inaugural Liberty Life Botswana Annual Conference where industry leaders came together under the theme “Regulatory Outlook on the Annuity Space”. Dr. Thuto Mahlanza, Director-Retirement Funds at NBFIRA, delivered compelling opening remarks emphasizing the critical role of regulation in safeguarding pension and insurance stability amidst global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and geopolitical tensions.

Botswana’s pension industry has shown remarkable resilience, with assets growing to P148.7 billion and pension fund membership reaching over 376,000. Dr. Mahlanza also highlighted pressing challenges in the annuity space ranging from limited product innovation to low financial literacy and competition from alternative investment products. Notably, Liberty Life’s introduction of the Living Annuity was recognized as a significant step in the right direction.
